Request for Travel Advice

So I have a huge favor to ask of all the amazing people out there in the blogging community...do you have any travel tips for Greece? Gabriel and I are absolutely dying to to travel again, after not having been anywhere since December! I know. We are spoiled. And completely addicted to traveling. And willing to eat discounted food and not purchase anything new for ourselves until we get our next travel fix. Anyway, we were looking for places to go where we could relax, while still exposing ourselves to culture (the days of my all-inclusive Caribbean vacations have passed, my friends). So naturally I proposed that we go to Greece! However, we're looking to do something a bit different. We'd like to stay on a small Greek island, preferably not a very touristy one. Ideally it would be great to rent a house/tiny apartment for a few weeks, and really get the "local" feel of the island.

I mean, how amazing would it be to wake up in a white-washed house, enjoy breakfast on a patio overlooking the Med, and spend the day relaxing, wandering through the village, and cooking fresh-from-the-sea fish for dinner? Perfection. This is exactly the type of holiday we're looking at taking, but we have no idea where to start! Most travel websites suggest going to Santorini. While unbelievably beautiful, I've seen so many "tourist" photos of the island that I've begun to question whether it would be authentic or rustic enough for us. It's definitely a stop we'd like to make, but not the entire trip. Gabriel's request is that there are beaches, and things to do in case we get bored just lazing about all day (which is likely to happen after a day or so).

So I ask of you, do you have any good Greek island recommendations? Places to stay? Greek experiences you could share with me? I'm all ears, and would really appreciate any help!

I have been to 3 different places in Greece: Santorini, Athens, and the small island of Skopelos. If you've seen Mamma Mia (the 2007 movie version), you may remember the gorgeous scenery, because that is where it was filmed. I would definitely recommend it, as it has a quaint, but bustling main town - Skopelos town- as well as plenty places to explore all over the island. Hikes, beaches, bike rentals, and the most amazing food in all of Greece. It's not the most accessible island - you can get there by ferry only, but totally worth it.

I've been to Greece twice, both times to small vacation-type Islands.

My recommendation is Crete. I know it's a bit bigger, but if you rent a car/brave the winding mountain roads, there's a lot to see on the Island. We stayed in a house on a mountain top overlooking the water, so the village wasn't in walking distance, but the view was breathtaking!

Another idea for a really small Island: Kos. It's basically the most southern tip and you can see Turkey from the Island - and there's day trips to Turkey you can take on a boat I believe

I loved staying on Syros. It was a VERY small island, but absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had more travel tips, but I didn't plan much. My boyfriend at the time was living there, and he showed me around. Either way, I hope you go and have a fabulous time. I'm sooooo excited for your pictures. :)

Athens you can see in a day, but if relaxation is what you want then you must go to an island. You might find cheeper prices on some of the lest populart island, and then you could visit some of the other islands using the ferry system.

Thank you all so much for your amazing recommendations. I am taking notes and will hopefully (fingers crossed) be going to Greece soon! xo
